This comprises two novels. Mackenzie's Pleasure is Zane's story. In the first book Mackenzie's mountain, Zane is a `twinkle in his dad's eye'. In the 2nd book (Mackenzie's Mission), which is son Joe's story, Zane is a much younger brother, but in Mackenzie's Pleasure, Zane is a big bad Navy SEAL. He saves the kidnaped daughter of an important ambassador. While escaping, they fall in love (repeatedly he ha!), then eventually life and family interferes, and they have to find their way back to each other.

I love this story. Essentially, they knew each other for only one day before their `happy ending'. It's also a suspense story, so there are bad guys and guns and bullets, so it qualifies in my opinion, as top grade entertainment. Also because it's part of the legacy of Wolf and Mary.

Mackenzie's Pleasure tells the story of the little sister Maris. (My little one has that name so I particularly loooovvvee this story - it is after all an odd little known name right?!). Maris is an almost magical horse whisperer. She's a celebrity in the horse world. This novel starts right in the thick of things. She awakes, half naked, in bed with a stranger, a throbbing headache (concussion), and doesn't remember the last 24 hours.

She was a witness that the bad guys were intent on murdering, so teaming up with an undercover FBI guy and falling for him works on so many levels. There was a conspiracy to kill expensive horses for the insurance, and Maris thwarts their evil intentions.

Now the really good part. At the end of each book, there is an epilogue. That's my favorite part. The author takes her time to lovingly describe their new lives together.

Each of the novels features a smart, successful virgin, who falls madly in love with one of the Mackenzie sons. They get married, and start filling their proverbial quiver with children. They all get together at their mom and dad's and support each other through thick and thin. It's escapist fantasy, and I for one like it.

Linda Howard did it again with the Mackenzie family. Maris, the darling of all the Mackenzie's finally finds her love and marries him on the spot just like other wives of the amazing men of the family. Along with intrigue this was a fun read.
Always love a Linda Howard book this just wasn't one of my favorites.

STORY BRIEF
Maris is a horse trainer. Someone plans to harm her favorite horse, and Maris is hit in the head. She wakes up in a motel room the next day with a concussion. Mac is with her. He was recently hired to work with her on the horse farm. Together they try to figure out what is going on and what to do about it. Maris has no memory of what she was doing before she was injured. Maris realizes she is attracted to Mac.

REVIEWER'S OPINION
This was about half the length of a typical romance novel. It was a "falling in lust" story. There was no time for any relationship development. It was shallow. I wanted more intrique, unique characters, and more interesting plot and dialogue. But if you loved the series, you might like this out of curiosity.

After the mystery and danger is over, a chunk of time is spent with Maris' family in Wyoming. There is the cute little toddler, all the hunky men, their wives and children. Everyone is loving and protective. It was a pleasant time.

OTHER BOOKS

CAUTION SPOILER
I didn't understand the scene in which Maris was hit in the head (which was told and not shown). Apparently the bad guy was starting to inject the horse when Maris arrived. He hits her in the head causing a concussion, but she is able to get on the horse and ride away. Can one be concussed and still mount and ride? Why couldn't the bad guy finish the injection as she was mounting? I wanted more details and showing, not telling.

The mackenzie family has been a series fave of mines for a while now. Starting with Joe, all the way down to Chance story. I wish Linda Had written more Mackenzie books. I would have love to see a book for each member of this family, thats how much I love these characters.Reading this series, is like reading about the kind of family i want. The characters make you feel the close-ness between each member of the family and how protective they are of each other, and how much they love each other. I want to read this story, right now, again as I write this review. They are that good
This story is like a connect the dots in that it marries off the last of the original couple's kids. The plot is predicable and the two main characters lack dimension. My favorite part was the end where the story reunites the reader with all of the Mackenzie Clan. Linda Howard is one of my favorite authors but this is not one of my favorite books by Ms. Howard. I've spent many hours reading her books and plan to keep it up. I figure everyone is entitled to an occasional dud..
Maris' story is 2 1/2 stars for me, the bump to a half star owing to the gathering of the family at the end. The story, unfortunately, suffers from telling and not showing plot details. The chemistry between Maris and Alex suffers from this as well. The reader is thrown into the present without adequate descriptions of past meetings and attraction between the couple. (The suspenseful aspect to the novel also suffers from this.) Flashback scenes would have helped tremendously. Those familiar with the Mackenzie Family books expect instant attraction between the hero and heroine, but it's just not developed in this one.
