In April 2014, Viktor Orbn, the youngest elected Prime Minister in Hungarian history, became Prime Minister of Hungary for the third time, for the second time with a supermajority, making him the most significant Hungarian politician since the 19th century. Beat that. He changed Eastern Europe, and may well do the same for Western Europe.

The Hungarian Tiger is everything you wanted to know about Hungarian politics, but were afraid to ask. It is both a profile of Orbn and an examination of the highly distorted and unfavourable image of him that has been propagated by the international press who, when it comes to Hungary, don't know their komondor from their kuvasz, or their kuruc from their labanc, or as we say in English, their arse from their elbow.

The Hungarian Tiger (Audible Audio Edition) Tibor Fischer Audible Studios Books

Knowing Mr. Fischer's style, this book is right in tune with his previous writings. The topic is interesting mostly to Hungarians, most of whom will not read it because they don't speak English. Too bad. The zany style is delightful if you don't mind a little profanity, which I don't. The "book" is a good counterpoint to tons of inaccurate, slanderous and often idiotic statements made by the western press, whether US, British, German or French. As Mr. Fischer says, nobody cares about Hungary, so why the hell do they bother to write garbage about it? Why not learn a little about the country before you embark on commenting on it - let alone criticizing it - and let alone criticizing it ERRONEOUSLY, if not viciously. Mr. Fischer is also right in stating that the "educated and cultured" world is generally leftist, and anyone NOT leftist must necessarily be anti-semitic, fascist, Nazi or some other form of objectionable being in their view.. Sad to say, most of these wonderful, cultured and educated people did NOT live under Joe Stalin's yoke; then they would sing a different tune. Remember, Old Joe died peacefully in bed having killed 30-40 million people.

The Hungarian Tiger (Audible Audio Edition) Tibor Fischer Audible Studios Books Reviews

I fall asleep whenever I try to listen to this movie.
Extremely well designed book that gives a glimpse into the Hungarian psyche---for those who care. And as the author says who cares really about Hungary; so why not choose a scapegoat there for all the ills of government? It won't bother anyone else.
Funny and insightful. Not worshipping Orban, but pointing out hsi principled determination. Of course, the hopelessly obtuse and entirely un- (actually anti-) Hungarian agitprop of Hungary's left is aptly demonstrated every day. But Fischer's writing fits the mood of the times well.
Thank you, Tibor! You provided an excellent summary of the last 25 years of Hungary. Anyone who wants to understand Hungarian politics today must first understand the players and the role they played since 1989. As a former supporter of them I am especially grateful for the accurate display of the shameful role of SZDSZ (Alliance of Free Democrats) and its intelligentsia.
This is a book I will recommend for each of my foreign friends who are interested in the politics of Hungary.
As the founder of the only foreign-language news source specializing in non-partisan coverage of Hungarian politics (Politics.hu) I've spent years nose-deep in the topic of Viktor Orbán and Hungarian politics as a whole, and I must say that what I was expecting to be another rehashing of recent Hungarian history. But Fischer's take on the tale is inventive, insightful and daring (he is, unlike essentially everyone about Hungary today from outside the country, an unapologetic Orbán apologist, something that could cost him). Truly, if you are only going to read one short book/long article about what future historians may judge to be a hugely important moment in the life of modern European, make it this one.
Well written and truly entertaining!
A pity, that it mostly a story of the authors undying love toward a corrupt turncoat who happens to be today the Hungarian PM, while both he and the country could have deserved better. Orbán should have pursued his soccer addiction instead, while the country would have been less experienced with the exploits of a wannabe dictator.
Just as a footnote The father of Orbán was a communist functionary, a local party secretary as it happens, the ‘hero’ himself a secretary of the Young Communist Party (KISZ) before turned to liberal democrat, which he later ‘changed’ to present state, recently fiercely advocating the benefits of the “illiberal state” - in the middle of Europe, mind you. These tiny details somehow missed the attention of Mr.Fisher, which I really feel sorry about - I really like his style and I rather curious of his take of the above facts..
Oh, well
And it's worth the price just for the Hungarian jokes. (There's one at the beginning of almost every chapter.) But the funniest parts are not the jokes, but the witty invective directed against corrupt Hungarian politicians and ignorant, lazy, and hypocritical foreign journalists who slander Viktor Orbán. I learned from this clever encomium that Viktor Orbán is neither antisemitic nor right-wing, and worked and works hard for his popularity.
Tibor Fischer writes entertainingly in the interest of justice (meaning being fair), even though, as he says repeatedly, "No one cares about Hungary."
