If you haven't lived in China, this is probably the ONLY way you can understand how things work here. The Beijing Olympics were probably the most expensively presented in the history of the Games...and, very likely, the best thought-out presentation. The account presented in this book includes many details that may be difficult to accept on the initial reading but, when you look at the direction China is taking, they reveal a great deal about what might lie in store for 'the rest of us'.The books title suggests a possible surprise...and YES, there are many. Mr Ruffolo's involvement in previous Olympic Games and events gives him many excellent points for comparison and professional comment/criticism.
From a marketing perspective, the Beijing Games presented both the 'spirit' of the Games ("with Chinese characteristics") and a fantastic "how-to-do-it" profile that the London effort could have/should have used as a model.
His personal and professional insights...and sharp-eyed comments...help bring what was before...and afterward, in London...a not-too-well-staged ego trip for the host countries.
Five (5) stars and really interesting reading...and NOT just for sports junkies. Many great insights into a culture that many people will want to/need to understand in the near future.

A long and poorly written love letter to Chinese culture. Not a terrible read.
Mr. Ruffolo has a wonderful perspective on norms, values and masters multi-culturism like few. This book talks about management, blunders and success in a personal and open perspective, like someone just pulled the curtain so we can all see the Wizard.
Mr. Ruffolo's book is a fascinating and entertaining story of effort overcoming obstacles and adversity. Truly an "insider's insider," Mr. Ruffolo affords a wonderful dissection of the complex media operations at an Olympic Games. A Gold Medal effort!
A refreshing and innovative real world look at what, to most of us, is a mysterious and engaging part of our sports and international involvements. Well worth the time to read. Ruffolo's life path and his career development, along with his true 'insider's viewpoint" are a journey not to be missed. Much to learn here, in this treatment of a unique life experience. Having known the man for three-plus decades, I can attest to his validity as an observer of the international scene.
